GBA MUST REMAIN INDEPENDENT AND RESIST POLITICAL INFLUENCE – LAWYER NANA OWONA ASUAKO KWAPONG
Lawyer Nana Owona Asuako Kwapong has called on the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to remain firm in defending the rule of law and maintaining public confidence in Ghana’s legal and democratic institutions. Speaking on the Ghana Nti Morning Show in an interview with host Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Lawyer Nana Owona Asuako Kwapong discussed concerns surrounding recent comments by the Attorney General and their possible impact on public confidence in the legal profession. He stressed the importance of lawyers maintaining their professional independence and ensuring that the Ghana Bar Association remains committed to the principles of justice, constitutionalism and the rule of law. According to him, the legal profession must not allow political considerations or external pressure to influence its professional responsibilities. He said the GBA has an important role to play in strengthening the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens. Lawyer Nana Owona Asuako Kwapong further noted that citizens look to the legal profession and the Ghana Bar Association for protection when their rights and freedoms are threatened. He therefore urged lawyers to remain courageous, principled and consistent in defending the rule of law, regardless of the political circumstances of the day. He said maintaining public trust in the legal profession requires lawyers and the Bar Association to demonstrate independence, professionalism and commitment to justice.
