Siaw Mandela Commends Mahama Over Ghana’s Rejection of US Health Compact
Political analyst Siaw Mandela has commended President John Dramani Mahama over Ghana’s decision to reject a proposed United States health compact, describing the move as a decision taken in the country’s interest.
Speaking to journalist Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Mr. Mandela said he supports the government’s position on the proposed agreement and praised President Mahama for what he described as a bold approach to protecting Ghana’s national interests.
President Mahama has explained that Cabinet raised concerns about aspects of the proposed arrangement, including provisions relating to Ghana’s medical records and pathogen data, counterpart funding, and the ability of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to inspect medicines and other medical products under the programme.
Mr. Mandela said the concerns raised by the government justified its decision and expressed appreciation to President Mahama for rejecting an arrangement he believes could have implications for Ghana’s interests.

Mr. Mandela has also drawn a comparison between President Mahama and Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Responding to a question from journalist Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi about whether President Mahama could be regarded as a second Kwame Nkrumah, Mr. Mandela said he believes Mahama could even surpass that comparison.
He pointed to what he considers recent decisive decisions by the President on matters affecting Ghana’s national interests as the basis for his assessment.
Mr. Mandela’s comparison of President Mahama to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is his political assessment and does not constitute an independently established historical conclusion.
The comments come amid discussions over Ghana’s decision concerning the proposed US health compact and the government’s stated concerns about health data, funding arrangements and regulatory oversight of medicines and other medical products.
