Cocoa Farmers Welcome New Producer Price, Urge Stakeholders to Protect Ghana’s Cocoa Industry
The President of the Cocoa Farmers Association, Nana Osei Bonsu, has welcomed the recent increase in the producer price of cocoa, saying the new price has been well received by farmers. Speaking to journalist Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Nana Osei Bonsu said the increase is encouraging and could motivate cocoa farmers to continue investing in their farms and production. He, however, stressed that farmers also have a responsibility to protect their farms and contribute to sustaining Ghana’s cocoa industry. Nana Osei Bonsu also commended Dr. Randy Abbey for his engagement with cocoa farmers, describing regular interaction with farmers as important in identifying challenges within the sector and finding practical solutions. He called for more engagements and visits to cocoa-growing communities across the country to enable farmers to directly communicate their concerns to stakeholders. The Cocoa Farmers Association president further appealed to stakeholders not to politicise Ghana’s cocoa industry. According to him, efforts should instead focus on policies and measures that protect farmers and ensure the sustainability of the sector. He also expressed concern about reports of some farmers selling cocoa across Ghana’s borders, including to buyers in neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire. Nana Osei Bonsu urged farmers to protect Ghana’s cocoa production and stressed that the long-term success of the industry depends on cooperation among farmers, government and other stakeholders. He reiterated the need for continuous engagement with cocoa farmers, saying their concerns should remain central to efforts to strengthen and protect Ghana’s cocoa sector.
