LAWYER ANOKYE FRIMPONG DEFENDS CHIEF JUSTICE’S INSTITUTIONAL VISITS
Historian and lawyer, Anokye Frimpong, has defended the Chief Justice, Baffoe Bonnie, over his recent visits to various state institutions. Speaking on the Ghana Nti Morning Show, Lawyer Anokye Frimpong said he sees nothing wrong with the Chief Justice engaging with other institutions, arguing that such visits should not automatically be interpreted as political. He explained that the Constitution provides for the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary as separate arms of government, each with distinct responsibilities, and therefore the Chief Justice is entitled to engage with institutions in the discharge of his duties. Lawyer Frimpong also rejected suggestions that the Chief Justice’s comments or activities indicate support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to him, political parties should not interpret every statement or action by the Judiciary through a partisan lens. He maintained that issues involving public institutions should be assessed objectively, adding that actions that deserve commendation should be commended, while those that require criticism should also be criticised. Lawyer Anokye Frimpong further argued that institutional development and investments that benefit the country should be encouraged, provided they are properly managed and serve the public interest. He called on President John Dramani Mahama to support and encourage the Judiciary and judges in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities. The discussion also touched on previous judicial and political developments, including debates surrounding the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission under earlier administrations. Lawyer Frimpong stressed the importance of accountability and institutional independence, urging the public to avoid politicising the work of constitutional bodies.
