Phone Dealers Association Calls for Justice, Vigilance and Action on Foreign Competition
The Phone Dealers Association at Kwame Nkrumah Circle’s Trotro Toll Lane is calling for justice following the death of one of its members, while also urging phone dealers to exercise greater caution when dealing with people they meet through social media and other online platforms.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Eric Gyamfi of the Phone Dealers Association said the deceased had reportedly met a lady through social media before the incident.
According to him, the family became concerned after the young man failed to return home. Information from his online chats and activities reportedly assisted the family in tracing developments surrounding his whereabouts.
Gyamfi said the association is leaving the matter in the hands of the appropriate authorities and expects the relevant institutions to ensure that justice is served.
He also called on phone dealers to be vigilant when dealing with unfamiliar customers, particularly individuals they first encounter online. He said the association is monitoring the situation and will continue to encourage members to take appropriate safety precautions.
Meanwhile, the association has raised concerns about increasing competition in Ghana’s mobile phone business.
Gyamfi alleged that some foreign nationals are increasingly taking over portions of the phone-dealing business, a development he said has become a concern for local dealers.
He stressed that members of the association do not intend to take the law into their own hands and would instead rely on the appropriate institutions to address their concerns.
The association is therefore calling for dialogue and lawful measures to protect the interests of legitimate phone dealers while maintaining peace and order within the sector.
